Stop Being the Bottleneck in Your Business
Apr 20, 2026
We’re into another week of our 12-week Dominate Your Busy Season series inside Dirt to Dollars, and this is where a lot of business owners hit a wall. At some point, you have to face the reality that you’re the one slowing things down. Most guys start their business because they’re good at the work, not because they know how to run a company. If you want to grow, that shift has to happen.
Why Growth Starts to Slow Down
Early on, doing everything yourself feels like the right move. You’re involved in every job, every decision, and every detail. But as the business grows, that same approach starts to hold you back. The more everything depends on you, the harder it is for anything to move faster. If things can’t run without you, growth is always going to be limited.
Trying to Do Everything Yourself
A lot of owners get stuck trying to handle both sides of the business. You’re out in the field all day, then trying to keep up with office work, sales, and everything else on top of it. It feels productive, but it spreads your time thin and keeps you stuck in the same place. There’s only so much you can do on your own.
Where Your Time Is Actually Going
The first step is being honest about how your time is being spent. If you’re putting hours into tasks someone else could handle for less, you’re stuck doing low-value work. That keeps you from focusing on the things that actually move the business forward. This is where a lot of guys get stuck without realizing it.

Learning How to Delegate
Delegation doesn’t happen all at once. You don’t hand everything off overnight, but you can start by taking small pieces off your plate. The goal is to free up your time so you’re not tied to every part of the job. When you start handing off the right things, it creates room for the business to grow.
Keeping Things Organized as You Grow
Delegation only works if there’s structure behind it. You need clear expectations, simple processes, and the right people in place so work gets done the way it should. Without that, everything still ends up coming back to you. When systems are in place, things move without you having to touch everything.
Build Systems That Help Your Business Grow
At a certain point, working harder stops being the answer. In Week 5, we continue looking at how systems help your business stay organized and actually grow. We cover estimating templates, scheduling systems, CRM usage, and simple SOPs so you’re not starting from scratch every time.
