We’re into another week of our 12-week Dominate Your Busy Season series inside Dirt to Dollars, and this is where leadership really starts to show. When things get busy, pressure builds quickly, and how you handle it is what your team pays attention to. Most guys don’t have a plan for when something goes wrong, so they react instead of thinking, and that’s when small issues turn into bigger ones.

Pressure Shows How You Lead

When everything is running smoothly, leadership is easy. The real test is how you respond when something goes off track. That’s when your team is watching how you handle it, how you communicate, and how you make decisions. Those moments set the tone for everything else.

Reacting vs Thinking

A lot of problems come from reacting too quickly. When something breaks, gets missed, or doesn’t go as planned, the first instinct is to jump on it. That usually leads to decisions made in the moment instead of thinking things through. Taking a step back gives you a chance to respond the right way instead of making it worse.

Process Problems vs People Problems

It’s easy to point fingers when something goes wrong. But most of the time, the issue goes deeper than that. If the same problems keep showing up, it usually means there’s something missing in the process or a lack of clear expectations. Fixing the system behind the problem is what prevents it from happening again.

Turning Problems Into Progress

The way you handle problems shapes your team. You can either create more tension, or you can use those moments to teach and improve how things are done. When you stay clear and controlled, your team understands what’s expected and how to respond next time. That’s how you build a stronger crew over time.

Where Profit Starts Slipping

Even when things look busy, profit can start to disappear if you’re not paying attention to the details. In Week 7, we continue looking at where money gets lost in your business. We cover underpricing, handling change orders, tracking labor, and jobs getting out of scope so you can hold onto the profit you’re working for.
